2013.05.02にスタートした「自動車用燃料としてのアルコール」の第2回です。今回は歴史のお話を続けます。

第1回　自動車用燃料としてのアルコール　第1回　内燃機関燃料としてアルコールとガソリンの歴史　オットーサイクルのニコラウス･オットーも登場　は　→　こちらをポチッと

調べる内に、前回登場してもらったニコラウス・アウグスト・オットーが1877年に開発したのはガソリンエンジンだったと書いている資料があったり(日本語版ウィキペディア　石油　ただし英語版には該当する記述無し)、1877年より前にアルコールエンジンが開発されていたと記述しているものもありました。1860年に既にオットーがアルコール燃料を使用した内燃機関を作った記述も見つけました。
石油は1850年頃には近代的に開発が始まっていたようなので、アルコールエンジンが生まれたときにはガソリンエンジンが無かったという記述も、確実にそうだとは断定する材料になりません。

ガソリン派、アルコール派といったら語弊があるかもしれませんが、それぞれの立場で都合のいいように過去の文献を解釈していたり、見間違っていたりして、インターネット上に載せていると思われます。従って、インターネット上にある資料の数の多い方などという判断をすると間違いの元ですから、現時点では「アルコールが先なのかガソリンが先なのかはあまりはっきりしない。」としておいた方がよさそうです。

アルコールとガソリンとどちらが先に登場したかと聞かれれば、工業的に生産されてランプなどに使われたのはアルコールの方が18世紀、ガソリンはエンジン用燃料として19世紀末と言う差が出てきます。石油から作られる灯油(ガソリンにあらず)がランプとして使われ始めたのは19世紀半ばです。
