今日はVW New Golfのエンジン紹介です。
搭載されるエンジンはEA211と言います。

新しく開発されたエンジンで、1.0Lから1.6Lまでラインナップされるようです。
グラフと表に示しているとおり、フォルクスワーゲンの既存エンジンと比べたら22kg軽量化されています。

(この記事で使用している写真はすべてフォルクスワーゲン作成です。)

一番大きいのはシリンダーブロックの16kgで従来の鋳鉄からアルミに変更されています。
すでに日本車ではアルミエンジンは珍しくないのですが、海外の車では珍しいのでしょうか。
とにかくこの軽量化がニューゴルフの燃費向上に一役買っています。


今は1.4Lと1.2Lの２機が存在しているようです。
1.4LはACT(Active cylinder management)とVWで読んでいる気筒停止機構搭載しています。これによって燃費向上しています。
下の写真のように４気筒の内真ん中の２気筒がお休みします。

この機構も以前採用した日本車が有りましたので、最新式というわけではありませんが燃費向上には役立っています。

過去の日本車でもそうでしたが気筒停止と言っても休む気筒のピストンが稼働停止するわけではありません。
吸気、排気バルブを閉じたままとし、さらには燃料の噴射を停止するだけです。
バルブを開けっ放しにする方が抵抗が少ないように思われると思いますが、吸い込む空気、排出する空気が抵抗となりバルブを閉めっぱなしの時より大きな抵抗となるためこのような機構となっています。
と知った風な説明文書きましたが、バルブを解放して外気を取り込むとそのシリンダーが冷えてしまいエンジンが過冷却になることや、休んでいる気筒が次に燃焼したときに元のパワーを引き出せないことも考慮して総合判断でバルブ全閉にしているのかななんて思ったり。
今度メーカーの人に聞いてみます。
